The Western Cape of South Africa contains some of the planet’s best sandstone/quartzite sport climbing, especially considering the cool but temperate conditions of July. Montagu is a world class destination set in the midst of a peaceful pastoral landscape. South Africa’s only developed limestone, Oudtshoorn comes complete with big caves and flowstone features. It’s a unique venue by South African standards, considering that most of the developed sport climbing is sandstone. We’ll spend the last few days of the tour at Mossel Bay, climbing seaside and surfing.

Trip #2 July 15-30 Waterval Boven

  • minimum ability 5.11b onsight/5.12a (6c/7a+) redpoint on rock

  • trip price $4250 ($6850 for the combined trip)

  • Fly-in/out location: Johannesburg

Waterval Boven contains the highest quality and concentration of sport climbing in South Africa. The temperate climate and cool temps during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter makes for a perfect destination for ambitious youth athletes on school holiday. Nearly 1000 bolted climbs exist on the area’s bulletproof quartzite sandstone. The routes are characterized by by their flowing and athletic sequences on crimps and slopers, with the occasional pocket or jug. Most routes are within the 20-30m range. Rest days will include a visit to Kruger National Park, which contains a significant population of Africa’s Big 5: lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.
